Systemic Discrimination

Research has shown that race and gender play a significant role in wrongful convictions. In Canada, Indigenous people are drastically overrepresented in the criminal justice system. According to Statistics Canada data, in 2023, Indigenous people in Canada were incarcerated at a much higher rate than non-Indigenous people. The rate of Indigenous people accused was nearly nine times higher than non-Indigenous people accused. For Indigenous women, the statistics are even worse with the rate of Indigenous women accused being just over 26 times higher than non-Indigenous women.
